Turbidity-controlled sampling for suspended sediment load estimation

چکیده

Automated data collection is essential to effectively measure suspended sediment loads in storm events, particularly in small basins. Continuous turbidity measurements can be used, along with discharge, in an automated system that makes real-time sampling decisions to facilitate sediment load estimation. The Turbidity Threshold Sampling method distributes sample collection over the range of rising and falling turbidity values and attempts to sample all significant turbidity episodes. A data logger activates a pumping sampler when specified turbidity conditions are met. The resulting set of samples can be used to accurately determine suspended sediment loads by establishing a relation between sediment concentration and turbidity for any sampled period with significant sediment transport. Relations between turbidity, concentration, and particle size are examined at five sites in northern California, USA. Despite the influence of particle size, turbidity is in all cases superior to flow as a surrogate for sediment concentration.

Turbidity-controlled suspended sediment sampling for runoff-event load estimation

For estimating suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in rivers, turbidity is generally a much better predictor than water discharge. Although it is now possible to collect continuous turbidity data even at remote sites, sediment sampling and load estimation are still conventionally based on discharge. With frequent calibration the relation of turbidity to SSC could be used to estimate suspende...

Turbidity Threshold Sampling for Suspended Sediment Load Estimation

Abstract: The paper discusses an automated procedure for measuring turbidity and sampling suspended sediment. The basic equipment consists of a programmable data logger, an in situ turbidimeter, a pumping sampler, and a stage-measuring device. The data logger program employs turbidity to govern sample collection during each transport event. Mounting configurations and housings for the turbidime...

A Comparison of Selection at List Time and Time-Stratified Sampling for Estimating Suspended Sediment Loads

Time-stratified sampling of sediment for estimating suspended load is introduced and compared to selection at list time (SALT) sampling. Both methods provide unbiased estimates of load and variance. The magnitude of the variance of the two methods is compared using five storm populations of suspended sediment flux derived from turbidity data. Under like conditions, the SALT coefficient of varia...

The most Appropriate Statistical Method for Suspended Sediment Estimation of Rivers (Case Study: Roodak Station of the Jajrood Basin)

The sediment load that is transported by rivers can create numerous problems such as sedimentation in the reservoir and storage capacity reduction, developed load in the rivers, destruction of structures along the river and transfer of pollution. Therefore, an accurate estimate of the sediment load in rivers is absolutely essential for river engineering, reservoir design, sediment transportatio...
